2014 MS Research Webinar
On June 3 the MS Society of Canada hosted the 2014 MS Research Webinar. The webinar is an annual event which features researchers and clinicians from all backgrounds and expertise who have an interest in studying multiple sclerosis. This year’s webinar included experts in the fields of rehabilitation, physiotherapy, symptom management, population health, and physical activity. Dr. Karen Lee, VP of Research at the MS Society was joined by Dr. Amy Latimer-Cheung from Queen’s University, Dr. Audrey Hicks from McMaster University, Dr. Michelle Ploughman from Memorial University, and Dr. Helen Tremlett from the University of British Columbia. Over 300 people from across the country registered for the webinar, which addressed very important topics in research such as how to effectively manage MS symptoms, the benefits of exercise in MS, MS risk factors, and the association between MS and other health conditions. Some key notes from the webinar as presented by the expert panel:
- 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise, in addition to strength training, twice a week is beneficial for people living with MS
- Exercise programs should be tailored to an individual’s needs and abilities to help manage MS symptoms
- Increase in brain chemical during exercise results in healthier brains and enhanced cognitive activity
- More evidence is needed to determine the impact of specialized dietary programs on MS
- Healthy aging with MS involved social engagement, adequate healthcare, exercise, and independence
- Life expectancy has improved among people living with MS
- Expecting mothers and fathers who have MS appear to not be at greater risk of pregnancy complications compared to the general population
