Friendly Visiting Volunteer - Calgary

Friendly Visiting Program
Calgary or Edmonton, Alberta

The Friendly Visiting Program aims to improve the quality of life of people with MS who live in long-term care by fostering supportive relationships between a resident and a volunteer. Your role is to visit with a resident at least twice per month to:

  • Reduce social isolation among those aged 65 and younger
  • Provide support, companionship, and appropriate activities to the resident (e.g., play a game, discover things that interest the resident)
  • Share information about MS, MS Canada, and appropriate community resources
  • Increase MS Canada’s awareness of the needs and issues of individuals living in continuing care

This role requires excellent communication skills, the ability to maintain confidentiality, and a high level of reliability and responsibility. Volunteers must be empathetic, supportive, and should be based in Edmonton, Calgary, or the surrounding communities.

As a Friendly Visiting Program volunteer, you will gain:

  • Training on a variety of topics, such as information about MS, communication, and boundary-setting
  • Opportunities to connect with members of your community and to other volunteers
  • Experience working in the non-profit and health services sector

We request a commitment until the end of the term on March 31st, 2025. Please note that you must be 18 years of age or older to volunteer with the Friendly Visiting Program. If successful, this position will require the completion of a vulnerable sector check and may have additional onboarding requirements depending on the long-term care home you visit (e.g., proof of immunization, TB testing).
