Government of Canada Announces One-Time Disability Payment

Support payment of $600 to help persons with disabilities during COVID-19

***Update: Approximately 1.6 million persons with disabilities will start receiving the one-time payment of up to $600 on October 30, 2020.***

On July 27, 2020, Bill C-20 (An Act respecting further COVID-19 measures) received Royal Assent moving forward COVID-19: One-time payment to persons with disabilities legislation, for the delivery of a one-time non-taxable and non-reportable payment of up to $600 to those eligible individuals with disabilities. Many Canadians with disabilities will receive this payment automatically, however, you must be registered for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC), to be eligible and you must apply by September 25.

If you are one of the 1.7 million Canadians who already receive the following benefits, you will automatically receive the $600 approved by Bill C-20 (COVID-19: One-time payment to persons with disabilities):

  • Holder of a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate;
  • Currently receive Canada Pension Plan (CPP) disability benefits or Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) disability benefits; or
  • In receipt of disability supports provided by Veterans Affairs Canada.

Seniors with disabilities are also eligible for the one-time disability payment and will receive a total amount of $600 broken into two payments as follows:

  • If they received the $300 one-time seniors payment for the Old Age Security (OAS) pension, they will receive an additional $300.
  • If they received the $500 one-time seniors payment for both the OAS pension and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) or the Allowance, they will receive an additional $100.

If you are already receiving any of the above benefits, you do not need to take any further action to receive the one-time disability payment. The payment is projected to be processed in the fall, but you can check here for updates on the timing of this benefit’s deployment.

There are several reasons why someone may not have applied to the DTC such as a low-income making the applicant ineligible for the tax credit itself or barriers to receiving the credit approval from a health professional. This one-time credit does not need to be applied for specifically, however those who are eligible must apply for the DTC to receive this $600 credit via direct deposit or mailed cheque.
