PoNS® is a medical device worn in the mouth. It includes a small controller and a mouthpiece that gently stimulates the tongue with mild electrical pulses. This stimulation may help improve walking and balance problems.
Indications and Use
PoNS® is used as part of a 14-week treatment program to help with:
- Balance issues caused by mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Walking difficulties related to mild or moderate multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Walking difficulties after a mild or moderate stroke
PoNS® must be used in combination with physical therapy and under the care of trained rehabilitation professionals.
Administration and Treatment
The device is placed on the tongue for 20–30 minutes per session, typically five times a day, six days a week, for 14 weeks. While wearing the device, individuals do specific physical therapy exercises guided by a certified PoNS® provider.
How It Works
PoNS® works by gently stimulating nerves on the tongue, which then send signals to parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and coordination. This helps activate the brain’s natural ability to rewire itself—a process called neuroplasticity. By encouraging the brain to form new connections, PoNS® may help improve walking and balance in people with neurological conditions like MS.
Most common side effects
- Mild tingling or discomfort on the tongue
- Dry mouth or extra saliva
- Headaches or dizziness during sessions
No serious or long-term side effects have been reported during clinical trials or since it was Health Canada approved. As with any therapy, individuals should talk to their healthcare provider before starting treatment.
Reimbursement
Some private insurance providers may offer partial reimbursement depending on the individual’s plan. Some clinics that offer PoNS® may provide payment plans or financial assistance for individuals who meet the eligibility criteria.
