Finding Strength and Solidarity Through MS Bike

Chantal’s Story

“I’ll never forget hearing the two words that would change my life: multiple sclerosis. I first realized something was wrong when I started losing sensation in both of my legs (up to my waist) and my arms. After seeing my family doctor, I was quickly referred to a neurologist and after an MRI and a lumbar puncture, I was diagnosed with MS.

I was in complete shock. You’re never truly ready for news like that. I cried a lot at first and I was angry, but I realized the only thing I could control was my reaction. I decided I wouldn’t let MS run my life and promised myself that no matter what happened, I’d see everything, do everything, and live my life fully without regrets. My partner of 21 years has been so supportive. He’s been there for me every step of the way. He’s a shoulder to cry on and the person who can find the right words to reassure me. And when there’s nothing to say or do, he simply offers a quiet presence.

In 2021, I participated in my first MS Bike. I joined a team made up of five other women who all live with MS. They came into my life at a time when, without realizing it, I truly needed their support. Their strength, resilience, humour, and understanding make them extraordinary women who are essential in my life and an important part of my support network.

In the beginning, I joined MS Bike because I love to challenge myself and I knew I could do it. That’s my philosophy in life—do what I can while I still have the strength. Now, I ride to raise funds and awareness, and above all, because it’s a special moment with my team.

It’s become my favourite weekend of the year! When everyone gathers at the start line on the first day, you can feel the excitement in the air. The collective energy carries me forward and gives me the momentum to ride at full speed. When I cross the finish line, I feel proud, but most of all I feel immense gratitude and a deep appreciation for every generous donor who contributes to raising funds and moving progress forward.

Our real hope lies in MS research, and for it to progress, we need to keep talking about it. I truly believe that one day we will find a cure—if not for me, then for the next generation.

Each year, I’m deeply moved to see the number of people who show up to ride, rain or shine, for our cause. MS Bike is an inclusive event where everyone comes together to raise awareness and funds for MS research. The different routes allow riders to choose their distance and go at their own pace. It’s not a competition; there’s no timer.

If you’re thinking about joining MS Bike, go for it! Find a team to join or start your own. Your team will be a big source of motivation and support! Take it one kilometre at a time and don’t worry about speed or distance. It’s truly accessible to all riders, no matter your level of experience, and that’s what makes MS Bike so special. For me, just being able to ride is a privilege.”
